Hyundai E&C, First in Construction Industry to Commercialize ‘D2D’ Autonomous Robot Delivery

Hyundai E&C is embarking on the full-scale creation of robot-friendly future residential complexes, becoming the first construction company in Korea to commercialize an autonomous robot delivery service.

Hyundai E&C announced that its indoor-outdoor integrated autonomous robot delivery service, jointly developed with Hyundai Motor Group startup Mobinn, will be launched first at 'THE H Daechi Edellui,' scheduled for completion this June. The company plans to gradually expand the application of this Door-to-Door (D2D) robot delivery service to other residential complexes in the future.

This D2D autonomous robot delivery service is notable for being the first in the Korean construction industry to not only integrate with wireless communication and control systems but also feature autonomous elevator usage, enabling seamless navigation throughout the entire complex: from the road, through the underground parking garage, common entrances, and elevators, all the way to the apartment doorstep.

Following the successful demonstration of its autonomous robot delivery service for residents of the 'Hillstate La Fiano Samsong' townhouse complex last year, Hyundai E&C officially announced the commercialization of the service through the application of intelligent technology, signing a memorandum of understanding with Hyundai Elevator early this year.

n particular, this upgraded technology is equipped with intelligent features that allow the robot to make independent judgments and decisions in various situations. This includes not only the autonomous ability to call an elevator but also the ability to re-call the elevator if its destination floor is no longer selected and to intelligently assess if the elevator has reached its full capacity.

Additionally, the autonomous delivery robot developed by Mobinn can be utilized for a diverse range of purposes, such as parcel and food delivery or security patrols, thanks to its barrier-free mobility technology. Its proprietary special rubber wheel structure allows it to easily overcome obstacles like stairs, and an integrated feature that keeps the storage compartment level ensures the safety of whatever is inside. Equipped with 3D LiDAR and cameras, the robot can recognize its surrounding terrain and objects to make comprehensive situational judgments. It is also equipped with an idle-time patrol mode, enabling autonomous movement that prioritizes pedestrian safety.

Hyundai E&C has proposed a plan to create a robot-friendly residential complex by applying the ‘D2D Autonomous Robot Delivery Service’ to the Hannam District 4 Redevelopment Promotion Zone in Yongsan-gu, Seoul (commonly referred to as Hannam District 4). Having previously secured all key urban redevelopment projects, including the Banpo Jugong Apartment Complex 1 and Hannam District 3, the company announced its plan to provide residents with an enhanced lifestyle by applying a wide range of smart technology services that present a new paradigm for future residential living to Hannam District 4 as well.

A Hyundai E&C official stated, “Designed for future customers looking for an unconstrained and comfortable lifestyle, the seamless indoor-outdoor autonomous robot delivery service with its barrier-free mobility will contribute not only to customer convenience but also to enhancing residents’ quality of life.” The official added, “We will continue to expand our housing technology and service domains to incorporate a robot-friendly future lifestyle, thereby leading the way in creating a differentiated residential lifestyle exclusive to Hyundai E&C.”

Hyundai E&C is consistently focusing its capabilities on discovering innovative services to lead the robot-friendly future of residential lifestyles. Last year, the company developed specialized services for residential complexes by collaborating with innovation platforms offered by group affiliates and promising startups, participating in initiatives such as a last-mile robot parcel delivery service project using Boston Dynamics' robot dog, Spot, in cooperation with CJ Logistics and the robotics startup D-Hive.
