Hyundai E&C has grown along the development history of Korean nuclear power plant. In 1971, starting with the first nuclear power plant in Korea, ‘Gori Nuclear Plant 1’, Hyundai E&C has participated as the main EPC provider for the construction of 24 out of 36 large Korean-type nuclear power plants operating locally and globally, including the recently awarded Shin Hanul Unit 3 and 4, and it is successfully executing the ‘UAE Barakah Nuclear Power Plant’ project, which was the first Korean nuclear power plant to be exported. UAE Barakah Nuclear Power Plant is a project that is constructing 4 APR 1400(Advanced Power Reactor 1400) nuclear power plants (5600㎿ in capacity) in Barakah, located in the western part of the capital city of Unite Arab Emirates, Abu Dhabi, and it is all the more meaningful in that it is the first nuclear power plant in the Middle East.
Hyundai E&C is expanding its business areas to all aspects of nuclear power plant based on the competitive edge that it gained from the large Korean-type nuclear power plants. It has the technological capability regarding not only the construction of the nuclear power plant but also regarding maintenance and repair, performance improvement and technological consultation, in addition to decommissioning of the nuclear power plant and facility to store the spent nuclear fuel. It entered into an agreement with a US nuclear power company, Holtec International, to jointly develop SMR (Small Modular Reactor) and enter the business, and is working on the development of SMR-160 together. SMR-160 is a general-purpose nuclear reactor that can be placed in regions such as deserts and polar regions without regional and environmental limitations. It will first be placed in the nuclear power plant site in Palisade, US, owned by Holtec, and it is also planning to be constructed in Ukraine for the reconstruction of the energy infrastructure.
The company is also showing its strengths in the transmission and distribution project which is the foundation of energy networks. It is showing off its leading technological capability in the transmission area including projects such as ‘Yeongheung marine transmission’, the first mega marine transmission line in the world, ‘765kV Shin-Gori – North Gyeongnam transmission’ that kicked-off the 765kV era, ‘345 kV Shin-Wolseong – North Gori transmission’, the central point in constructing the extra-high voltage electricity grid in the southeastern region. Excellent ability to execute construction shone even more brightly in overseas regions. If the lengths of all of the extra-high voltage transmission lines constructed in the world such as 800 km long ‘GCC 400kV transmission line’, connecting the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), and 417 km long ‘Qassim-Madinah 380kV transmission line’, connecting the central and western regions of Saudi Arabia, were added, it would be amounting to 32,000km. Hyundai E&C is leading the construction of the global power network as the leader in the area of EHV (Extra High Voltage), GIS (Gas Insulated Switchgear) and AIS (Air-Insulated Switchgear) substation in the Asian markets including Myanmar and Malaysia as well as the Middle Eastern markets such as Saudi Arabia, UAE, Kuwait and Qatar. Hyundai E&C has the ability to implement all from design to commissioning of the unmanned SAS (Substation Automation System). Moreover, recently, it entered into an agreement for ‘Saudi NEOM-Yanbu 525㎸ High Voltage Direct Current transmission system(HVDC) construction project’, and it plans to construct the electricity grid from the power generation base in the western coast of Saudi, Yanbu, to NEOM City.
Hyundai E&C is also actively engaged in the renewable energy business and actively takes part in overcoming the global warming crisis. Hyundai E&C revealed its capability to execute the eco-friendly power generation business by carrying out business development, EPC (Design/Procurement/Construction) and O&M (Facility maintenance/management) of ‘Seosan PV Power Plant’ that links the utility-level Energy Storage System (ESS) for the first time in Korea. In addition, it is continuing to secure a leading position in the eco-friendly renewable energy generation business through the consecutive construction of the ‘Indonesian Sarulla Geothermal Power Plant (330MW)’, the world’s largest geothermal power plant, ‘Daesan Biomass Power Plant (109MW)’, a renewable energy generator, and ‘Saemangeum Onshore Solar PV Project Zone 3 (99MW)’.
Hyundai E&C is developing technology related to new forms of energy in relation to water electrolysis-based hydrogen production and carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS) to respond to energy transition and climate change, and is also actively participating in demonstration projects in Korea for the commercialization of technology. As the leader of the future energy business, Hyundai E&C continues to lead the value chain for the green energy business, and will take the lead in constructing the global network and developing the business for renewable energy in order to achieve carbon neutrality.
