Based on the vision and slogan of the Hyundai Motor Group in social contribution, as a leading global construction company, Hyundai E&C has made utmost efforts to achieve mutual growth with the local community through strategic social contributions by utilizing the characteristics of construction industry. We seek communal development with the third-world and developing countries by deploying the economic-social infrastructure in a local community in the global markets we entered and practicing social contribution activities as a mandatory in developing countries. In overseas construction sites, we not only conduction construction work, but also annually fulfill corporate social responsibilities essential to a local community with the international development cooperation institutions and H-CONTECH Volunteer Corps, which include poverty, education, hygiene, culture, residence, and environment in order to spread our technology and deliver the Korean culture. Going forward, as “a member of the global society,” we will fulfill social responsibility by implementing social contribution activities continually based on a local community to cooperate and make mutual growth with the community.

Independence support for second-class citizens and promotion of talented people

For those who have dream and hope, but don’t have any opportunity due to environmental reasons and high entry barriers, Hyundai E&C has launched and operated “HILLSTATE Dream Mentoring Volunteering Group” since 2014. Through the mentoring program, High school student mentees has been taught from university student mentors. Also University student mentors get tips on practical affairs related their Majors from employee mentors. Dream Mentoring Volunteering Group is not just focusing on academic performance, but also focusing on emotional sharing and sustainable relationship.

Social contribution using business resource and capability of affiliated companies

By taking advantage of the characteristics of a construction company, Hyundai E&C gives education, support livelihood, and introduce technologies suitable to under-developed countries in terms of hygiene and residential environment. The first H-CONTECH Volunteer Corps was dispatched to Sarulla, Indonesia, the second Volunteer Corps to Hanoi and Haiphong, Vietnam, the third Volunteer Corps to Cilegon and Cirebon, Indonesia. The Volunteer Corps conducted volunteer activities and technical seminars in overseas local areas. It is a technology exchange type overseas volunteer corps sharing our technologies while informing the culture of South Korea to major countries we entered into.

Social contribution that involves participation of employees and consumers

Hyundai E&C has been carrying out various volunteer participation and sponsorship projects to support the underprivileged in Korea. Through the "Love Sharing Fund," a donation created by collecting some of the voluntary salaries of employees for 11 years, we are conducting social contribution activities to spread help to neighbors in need near domestic and foreign workplaces (KRW 3.58 billion accumulated for 11 years) In addition, in order to solve the shortage of blood supply and demand due to the COVID-19, about 350 employees are volunteering annually to save their neighbors' lives through donations of blood.
As part of strengthening ESG management, we are conducting a donation campaign every quarter to collect used clothes and miscellaneous goods from employees for recycling and reuse of resources. Collected items are donated and sold to ‘The Beautiful Stores’ and its profit is used to support the underprivileged in the community.

Improvement in traffic safety and social safety

Hyundai E&C has strengthened social contribution activities in the field of disaster safety by taking advantage of the characteristics of the construction industry. As the importance of equipment that could protect children's heads in the event of a disaster such as an earthquake, the development of ‘Light Safety Helmet’ has been promoted as part of a social contribution project to provide practical help to children's safety. The Light Safety Helmet project has been distributing 4,000 units of helmets to six schools in Busan from 2021 to 2022 and also providing emergency evacuation training. Hyundai E&C continues various social contribution projects that fulfill our social responsibility in the field of children's disaster safety by providing regular comprehensive disaster safety education to students.

Strive to maintain our environment and to deal with the climate change

In order to achieve the ‘Global Green One Pioneer’ vision, Hyundai E&C has established a long-term roadmap by 2050 to implement various environmental and energy management policies. We strive to preserve the global environment by improving environmental efficiency through systematic management and minimizing all environmental impacts on corporate activities. In particular, ‘H-Green Saving’, along with The Seoul Climate Environment Headquarters, The Korea Energy Corporation, and The Seoul Social Welfare Council, is a program to replace general lighting devices at 15 social welfare facilities with 1,000 units of high-efficiency LED lighting devices. In the future, the replacement of high-efficiency LED lights could be expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and electricity bills for the energy vulnerable, and carbon emission rights obtained by greenhouse gas reduction will be donated to be used for youth energy education projects in the environmental career field.

Improvement in convenient movement for trafficking weak and disadvantaged

“Easy Move” offers a joy of autonomous life through aid projects including establishment of a social company, expansion of facilities convenient for mobility, and provision of vehicles for a welfare community center to prevent those vulnerable to transportation from experiencing any limit in moving.

Hyundai E&C has operated and managed external donations in a transparent way.
Externally, we run the independent Transparent Management Committee (“investment information” – “corporate governance”-“committee”) and also run the independent (specialized) Social Contribution Committee.

  • The Committee is established to enhance transparency in the operation system and reinforce the expertise.

  • Agenda of the Committee meeting are as follows: Reveal the details of donations made by Hyundai E&C, share business plan, evaluate the outcome of social contribution, and review and give advice on donation.

    Launch of 8th Hillstate Dream Mentoring Volunteer Group
    On September 11, the launching ceremony of the 8th HILLSTATE Dream Mentoring Volunteer Group was held online. The ceremony was designed to promote communication with college student mentors and teen mentees from the MZ generations at a time when face-to-face events had been limited due to Covid-19. The 8th volunteering group was launched with 18 employees, 18 college students, 18 teenagers, and 3 college student supporters and will be organized into a three-person teams of “employee-college student-teen” for about 12 months until August 2022 to conduct key academic and career mentoring activities.

    Hyundai E&C Promotes Seoul’s “H-Green Saving” Project to Improve Energy Efficiency
    On August 26, at City Hall Seosomun Office, Hyundai E&C signed an agreement with the Seoul Climate and Environment Headquarters, the Korea Energy Corporation, and the Seoul Council on Social Welfare to improve energy efficiency for the vulnerable and social welfare facilities. Through this agreement, Hyundai E&C will participate in the CEMP project to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and implement energy welfare. In response, Hyundai E&C started an H-Green Saving project to replace general lighting devices at vulnerable groups and social welfare facilities suffering from energy poverty with high-efficiency LED lighting devices by donating its own contributions and funds voluntarily collected by executives and employees. Once the greenhouse gases reduced by H-Green Saving are recognized as carbon emission rights, the profits from the emission rights will be donated again to energy education projects for elementary and middle school students.

    Hyundai E&C to Host “Fun Smart City” for Middle School Students in Jongno-gu
    Hyundai E&C signed a “Creative Education CSR Operation Agreement” with the Jungbu Office of Education, Jongno-gu Office, and Hyundai Engineering in June 2021 and conducted the Jongno Creative Education CSR “Fun Smart City” program at Cheongun Middle School and Seoul National University Girls` Middle School from July 5 to 7. The goal of the Creative Education CSR is to help seventh graders to understand the construction industry and gain indirect practical experience of on-site operations. Students learned about the concept of smart city and problems of current cities through special lectures by Hyundai E&C executives and employees and took part in practical sessions to envision the future city (smart city) they each wanted.

    Hyundai E&C “Rounds Down Salary and Donates Extra Pennies” to Community Chest of Korea
    Hyundai E&C and Hyundai Architects & Engineers Assoc. executives and employees donated about 280 million won to Community Chest of Korea located in Jeong-dong, Gwanghwamun, Seoul, on December 16, 2020. The fund was raised by rounding down the employees’ pay and donating the extra pennies to the chosen charity. The Love Sharing Fund has been in place for ten years since 2010. To date, more than 32,000 executives and employees have collected about 3.3 billion won and donated to the local community. The donations have been used to build resident and community facilities in developing countries such as Bangladesh and Indonesia, offer support for Covid-19 relief in Korea, improve housing environment in Jongno, and provide food assistance to the vulnerable groups.

    “2020 Global Standard Management Awards” for Social Contribution
    Hyundai E&C received the grand prize in the social contribution category at the “2020 Global Standard Management Awards” organized by the Korea Management Certification on October 27. The Global Standard Management Awards is a comprehensive award system that measures the objective level of management strategies, future values, products and services adopted by companies by selecting excellent sustainable companies in a total of seven categories, including family-friendliness/corporate social responsibility/quality. For the first time this year, Hyundai E&C won the grand prize in the social contribution category. It was the only construction company, highly recognized for operating the “CSR Committee” and the “CSR Website” to communicate with various stakeholders, while introducing a CSR mileage system to encourage executives and employees to participate in CSR activities.

    Launch of 7th HILLSTATE Dream Mentoring Volunteering Group
    A virtual ceremony to launch the 7th HILLSTATE Dream Mentoring Volunteering Group celebrating its seventh anniversary this year, was held on October 24. The seventh group will be participated by 20 executive and employee mentors, 20 college student mentors, 20 teen mentees, and four college student supporters. The HILLSTATE Dream Mentoring Volunteer Group is a volunteering group in which youth mentees in need of academic and career mentoring, university mentors who seek to develop their dreams, and Hyundai E&C employees or management mentors who are experts in the construction sector, get together to form a team on an 1:1:1 basis to join a long-term mentoring program for about 10 months.
