Hyundai E&C invited Dr. Kris Singh, founder and CEO of Holtec International (Holtec), a leading US-based nuclear power company, to identify technologies that will lead the energy market and share his vision for the future to address the immediate challenges including the climate crisis.

Hyundai E&C hosted a special lecture by Holtec President Dr. Kris Singh on “Innovation and Growth in Nuclear Technology and Future Energy” at the Hyundai E&C headquarters auditorium in Jongno-gu, Seoul on Wednesday, November 11. The lecture was held as part of an invitational event for its partner Holtec, and in addition to Hyundai E&C employees, more than 400 people from nuclear-related organizations and associations such as the Korea Nuclear Association, Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), Korea Electric Power Corporation Nuclear Fuel (KEPCO NF), Doosan Enerbility, POSCO E&C, and Hyundai Steel, as well as industry and academia, filled the auditorium to show their deep interest in what the American nuclear scholar had to say.

Dr. Singh holds a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania, where he is currently a senior research fellow and advisor in mechanical engineering. He is also professor emeritus at the University of South Florida Research Institute and is also a prominent figure in the US nuclear and energy community, having been honored with the Trailblazers award in commercial nuclear power by the US Nuclear Infrastructure Council.

Also, Holtec, which he founded in 1986, is a nuclear power specialized company with more than 100 patents in core areas such as nuclear power plant design, materials, and manufacturing, and is present on five continents with 19 subsidiaries, holding a unique position in the nuclear power business, including the world's #1 market share for spent fuel storage facilities and the #1 market share in the US for nuclear power plant decommissioning.

Hyundai E&C signed an exclusive agreement with Holtec in November 2021 to collaborate on projects across the nuclear power value chain, including ▲ SMR development and project implementation, ▲nuclear power plant decommissioning, and ▲the construction of a temporary storage facility for spent nuclear fuel. Both parties are expanding their global reach to become a key player in the international nuclear power business, with the SMR-160 model, which is in the process of being commercialized, considered for joint entry into more than 15 countries, including Europe as well as the US.

In his talk, Dr. Kris Singh conveyed his firm belief that, “Following the 19th-century British Industrial Revolution powered by fossil fuels, the world is now poised to undergo an energy transformation. With investments in low-carbon energy already surpassing $1 trillion, a historic high,” while emphasizing that, “Nuclear power will be instrumental in this upcoming clean energy era, overshadowing other renewable sources, with its huge market potential.”

Moreover, the strength of Holtec's SMR-160 model includes ▲ more than 100 years of lifespan ▲ specialized design for extreme safety and easy maintenance ▲ efficient land use irrespective of small area and geographical characteristics ▲ standard design with global expansion in mind ▲ multifunctionality using hydrogen and Green Boiler. In addition, Dr. Singh stressed that Holtec's Green Boiler and HI-THERM CSP (Concentrated solar power, which reflects sunlight through mirrors and collects it in a solar tower to produce electricity), further maximize energy efficiency, and the clean energy generated by these three solutions will lead the way to achieving net-zero carbon emissions together with Hyundai E&C.

“With intensifying competition in the next generation nuclear power plant, SMRs, Dr. Kris Singh's visit to Korea further solidifies Hyundai E&C and Holtec's trust-based relationship and reputation," said an official from Hyundai E&C. “We look forward to seeing tangible results as we continue to work together toward the construction of the first SMR at the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant site in the US.”

In addition to the special lecture, Dr. Kris Singh, during his 3night/4 day visit in Korea from October 10 to 13 held in-depth discussions with Hyundai E&C President Yoon Young-joon over two days on all aspects of the nuclear business.
