Hyundai E&C is working on the construction of the 12.5-kilometer double-track railway between Maepo-eup and Daegang-myeon in Danyang as part of the national project designed to transform the 145.1-kilometer single-track railroad into double-track line connecting Danyang in Chungcheongbuk-do and Yeongcheon in Gyeongsangbuk-do under the National Railway Network Plan for the Jungang Line.
The completion of the construction would increase the number of daily train service from Dodam to Andong from 33 to 137, while decreasing travel time between Cheongryangri, Seoul, and Danyang from about two hours to one hour and between Seoul and Gyeongju from about six hours to two hours.

The Dodam-Yeongcheon double-track line construction (section 1) is to build the 4.8-kilometer roadbed, four bridges, two tunnels, two train stations and one terminal. As of now, about 98 percent of the construction has been completed, and the first construction section connecting Dodam and Yeongju will open at the end of October this year.

Danyang is already a well-known tourist destination famous for its beautiful natural scenery such as the Eight Views of Danyang and Sobaeksan Mountain and for exciting leisure activities including paragliding. A few architectural structures located in the construction section conducted by Hyundai E&C are emerging as new tourist attractions. Notably, the Namhangang Bridge is an arch-truss bridge in harmony with the sky, the river and the landscape. The bridge with arch above the deck was designed to minimize the number of bridge piers with an aim to support high-speed trains in a stable way and facilitate maintenance of the bridge.

The 4.9-kilometer Simgok Tunnel, which opened in 2017, includes the 500-meter coal seam located near the abandoned mine area. Coal beds entail the soft ground and have a greater risk that possible cavities can decrease the safety of the ground and structures. To deal with this, the construction site put a top priority on safety rather than on construction speed. To minimize the effect of the construction on tunnel safety, Hyundai E&C was determined to adopt New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) and carefully dig only two meters on a daily basis depending on ground conditions, while also using excavators on the even more unstable ground. The construction site employed the combination of micropile technology using grout injection and jet grouting for reinforcing the tunnel ground, which secured the safety of the tunnel construction at shallow depth.

In addition, the construction site made all-out efforts to improve the site management by providing safety-related training programs in lockstep with the construction progress. As a result, it has achieved “no accidents” up to date.
