Q1. Please tell us about your job

I am in charge of electrical and telecommunications work at the Jamsil Stadium remodeling site. I give work instructions by categorizing the equipment and facilities to be retained and demolished according to the design plans. I also manage and supervise construction work such as relocating existing communication lines and power cables to other routes so that they do not interfere with the demolition process, and safely dismantling and transporting electricity-related equipment after a power outage. In ation, I am also invovled with reviewing design drawings in preparation for the upcoming construction of the Seoul Student Gymnasium, administrative building, sports facility building, and am also handling the audit team's requests. 

Q2. What competencies do you need most in your job? 

The first thing you need is “theoretical expertise” in your field of work. As you work in on-site construction, you will come across drawings, specifications, and other design documents. Having theoretical expertise in your field of specialty will help you better understand the current situation and accurately handle the tasks at hand. 

The second thing you need is problem-solving skills and a sense of responsibility. On-site construction is a complex, multidisciplinary process, and unexpected situations often arise. For example, there was a situation where existing electricity and communication cables had to be relocated due to the new and expanded temporary fence on site. The relevant team obtained information on the future plans for the temporary fence, and confirmed the purpose of the cables and whether they could be relocated with the electricity and telecommunications contractors and carriers to resolve the issue.

Q3. How did you prepare for joining the company? 

It's important to show consistency between the job you're applying for and the direction you've been preparing. I majored in electrical engineering as an undergraduate and earned my electrician's license. I then gained practical experience working as an electrician on site for a medium-sized construction company for about 10 months.

I realized how what I learned in my undergraduate studies and what I studied while earning my electrician's license are applicable to my workplace. I was able to answer questions about electrical, telecommunication, and fire protection work more confidently in the interview because I had first-hand experience in electrical work along with an insight into the site.

Q4. Is there a corporate culture or system at HDEC that you would like to share? 

We have regular meetings and announcements on site to communicate and confirm with each other. Every day, we have TBMs (Pre-work safety meetings) in the morning and DABs (Daily safety meetings) in the afternoon to announce the work for the day and the next day, including the location, hazards, and safety measures. It is a system that allows you to prepare and plan by checking the progress of the site in advance beforehand. In addition, PTW (Work Permit) is announced once a week to communicate the next week's work and equipment to be used. It is a system that is very beneficial to the site because you can plan your upcoming work, document preparation, etc. in advance.

Q5. Do you have any advice for juniors who want to work at HDEC?

Hyundai E&C is a company you can be proud to work for after joining. There are civil engineering, architecture, housing, plant, nuclear power, and other projects in Korea and abroad, so you can gain much more diverse experience than working in other industries and companies. For those who have a vague fear of the construction industry and the field, I would like to say that there is no need to worry. I have experienced Hyundai E&C's projects firsthand, and the process is systematic and safe.
